Class Descriptions
Adult Classes
Adult Beginning Sewing (4 sessions): This class is for the novice, one who has little or no sewing experience and starts with learning the basics of the sewing machine operation and tools of the trade. The student will also begin to learn how to work with patterns, choose the appropriate fabric, as well as basic measuring, marking, and cutting techniques. Sewing skills are taught through the use of practice samples and completion of a simple project approved by the instructor (a wrap skirt this round). Additional supplies necessary.
Techniques I (4 sessions): Refresher on the basics of your machine. Construct a basic skirt with zipper, waistband, and learn special seam and hem finishes. Understand how to read a pattern, know which measurements to take and how to adjust your pattern in order to ensure a better fit. Discussion of styling appropriate for your body type included. Some sewing experience needed. Additional supplies necessary.
Techniques II (4 sessions): Continue learning basic sewing techniques by constructing a blouse or robe. includes techniques for measuring body and applying appropriate pattern alterations. Construction of collars, sleeves, buttonholes, and sleeve cuff finishes appropriate for your project. Additional supplies necessary.
Custom Pattern Block (5-6 sessions): Students in this class will learn how to draft their own set of pattern blocks–bodice front and back, sleeve, skirt and pants. This includes comprehensive full body measurements, drafting of patterns, test muslin, and oak tag final pattern blocks that you can use for endless adaptation. This is for someone who already knows how to sew, and wants the ability to make clothes/patterns that fit impeccably. It’s also for anyone interested in the pattern block alteration classes coming later, that will teach you how to adapt your blocks into specific designs. All supplies included.
Sip ‘n Sew (single sessions): Enjoy sewing with friends once per month at our sip n’ sew events. Enjoy our dirty soda bar and bring your projects. Get help, chat, and enjoy your evening with other like-minded sewers.
Sew Along (variable): A specific pattern will be provided for a few sessions of sewing to complete the project. This is for people who sew, but might be interested in expanding their skills, who can work independently but would like confirmation/help along the way. This is not a demo class, but a “sew together” style class where you have access to an experienced sewer for help.
Kid Classes
Beginning Sewing I (4 sessions): Kids will learn how to use a sewing machine and other tools, cut out a pattern, and construct a crewneck sweatshirt. This can pair with beginning sewing II, or taken as a stand-alone. Additional supplies required.
Beginning Sewing II (4 sessions): Kids will learn how to use a sewing machine, cut out a pattern, and construct a pair of sweatpants. This can pair with beginning sewing I, or taken as a stand-alone. Additional supplies required.
Sewing Groups (custom): 4-H, homeschool groups, or any group of kids who want to gather, choose a project, and sew. This can be led by Kayla for a higher cost, or as a space/machine rental for a lower cost if you have an adult who sews that can lead the group.
